What Are Spicules?

Spicules are microscopic, needle-shaped structures that form the skeletal framework of marine sponges and certain types of coral. These naturally occurring micro-structures have been used in Eastern Asian and Russian skincare traditions for centuries, and in recent years they've become one of the most talked-about innovations in professional aesthetics.

In their natural state, spicules are composed of 100% hydrolyzed sponge: a single, clean ingredient. When massaged into the skin, they create a micro-channeling effect that allows them to act as a trans-epidermal delivery system. As they embed into the epidermis, they trigger a natural histamine response that draws oxygen-rich blood to the surface, creating a powerful oxygenating effect.

As the spicules gradually dissolve over the following days, they release a natural complex of vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds that stimulate collagen production, normalize melanocyte activity, and improve overall cellular health. This process typically accelerates epidermal turnover to approximately three days (compared to the skin's natural 28-day cycle).

Why Liquid MicroNeedling?

Liquid microneedling (the professional term for spicule-based resurfacing) delivers deep renewal through nature's own micro-structures. Here's what makes this approach exceptional.

Controlled Micro-Stimulation

Spicules enhance keratinocyte activity at the cellular level, accelerating epidermal turnover for faster, more predictable renewal without relying on acids or mechanical devices.

Increased Micro-Circulation

The histamine response triggered by spicule embedding improves oxygen and nutrient delivery to the skin, creating a natural oxygenating effect that supports healing and radiance.

Cytokine-Driven Renewal

Spicules upregulate regenerative signaling pathways (including TNF-α and IL-1α), activating the skin's own repair mechanisms for renewal that starts from within.

Barrier-Respectful Remodeling

Unlike chemical peels that dissolve the barrier through keratolysis, spicules reorganize the epidermis mechanically, delivering exfoliation and remodeling without compromising skin integrity.

100% Natural & Acid-Free

Spicules contain no acids, no synthetic chemicals, and no proteins that could denature. There's no risk of the treatment traveling deeper than intended or burning the skin.

Safe for Pregnancy & All Fitzpatricks

Because spicules are entirely natural with no chemical agents, they are safe for pregnant and breastfeeding clients, and appropriate for all skin tones and Fitzpatrick types.

How Spicules Compare

Understanding the differences between spicule peels, chemical peels, and traditional microneedling helps you choose the right approach for your skin.
